Welcome to Romania!

We arrived in Cluj, Romania on Monday, January 3 after a fun overnight at the airport in London.  Everyone was pretty tired and seemed to fall asleep on every leg of the journey.  We came through customs without a hitch (I think I was actually quite entertaining to the customs officer!) and found our fellow YWAMer, Amanda, quite easily in the tiny airport.  Amanda had spent Christmas in Cluj and was headed back to Targu Mures, he home base.  We made our way to the bus station in a caravan of 4 taxis...there was a lot of argument and negotiation with our insistant driver who wanted to drive us all the way to Targu Mures.  He was trying hard to make an offer we couldn't refuse but Amanda was convinced it was not a good plan.  We missed the first bus out and actually got on the wrong bus after that but finally we were underway.  It was so snowy, slippery, muddy and cold!  I was a little unhappy about pulling my heavy bag through the muck...afraid the wheels were too low and the whole thing would be destroyed but luckily everything worked out ok and our guys were super helpful with loading and unloading the bags.  Apparently none of us were great at packing light!

I missed most of bus journey because I fell asleep but when I opened my eyes, I was overwhlemed at the view!  It was so beautiful.  Rolling snow covered hills filled with little village houses.  ON each peak, you would see a beautiful old church with a tall steeple.  I tried to snap some pictures but between the winding roads and the filthy bus window, I had little luck.
The city view from our bathroom window!

We finally arrived in Targu Mures and found another cab driver that could understand Amanda's rough Romanian.  We loaded up again...these cars were not made for all of our baggage!  One team ended up riding with an open trunk and another had Amanda's great big bag in their laps!  It was a short trek to the YWAM base and we were so excited to get here and see the lovely house!  We were greeted by the team and excited that sandwich stuff was laid out for us.  We got settled into our rooms...the accomodations are great.  There are two rooms for 5 girls and one room for the 2 guys.  Our two leaders are sharing rooms with two of the staff here on the "staff floor".

Tuesday morning, we met the rest of the staff and leaders and headed out to take a tour of the city.  Jerry, the base director showed us around and gave us a little  local history.  We were all tickled with the gypsy people in their traditional dress and the furry hats the local men wear!  The city is full of beautiful arcitecture and rich culture.  We topped our tour off with lunch at McDonalds!  It was actually very tastey!  Let the fun begin!
